November 28, 2016 marks the commencement of the long-awaited Spirit Week at TERRA, which encourages students to dress up according to theme and celebrate school spirit. This year, Sports Day kicked off the week, which leads up to the Grease-themed Homecoming on Saturday. Spirit Week is frequently viewed as a fun respite from the usual.

“I think students enjoy dressing out so much because they get to express themselves. My favorite part is seeing all the unique outfits people come up with!” senior Karina Bermudez described. Today, students crowded the TERRA hallways adorned with their favorite jerseys, often proudly displaying their national or favored team.

“Dressing up for Sports Day lets me represent my home team,” freshman Jorge Carmona expressed while wearing a Miami Heat jersey. His sentiment seemed to be shared by many students as Miami Heat, Miami Marlins and Miami Dolphins jerseys were commonly found in the crowd. Although, other students distinctly wore jerseys of different teams, such as sophomore Lisa Valdes. “I love my team. I grew up watching football and the New Orleans Saints have always been my favorite,” she explained while showing off her adored Drew Brees jersey.

Numerous students enjoy going all out on their outfits and invest a lot of time on them. Junior Jordan Arroyo was dressed in an immaculate head-to-toe Washington Nationals baseball uniform. “I dressed up the way I did because I was inspired by this young kid, Bryce Harper, that plays for the Washington Nationals. I usually dress all out during Spirit Week because I like to have fun and show my spirit towards my school,” he continued. Arroyo was just one of multiple who invested a great deal of thought into their outfit, some students wore soccer cleats, while others even had face tattoos.

Even though Spirit Week just began, students have already thought of new additions to next year’s Spirit Week. Twin Day and Jocks vs. Nerds Day were some of the suggestions, Gender Bender Day being the most popular. TERRA students will just have to wait and see until next year to see if their suggestions made it. Meanwhile, be sure to show your school spirit this week and dress up, tomorrow is Tacky Tourist Tuesday!
