On Jan. 20, the psychological thriller film Split was released to theaters around the country. The film is about three young girls who are kidnapped by a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder, played by James McAvoy. The girls must work together to escape him and his many personalities, ranging from Jade, a teenage girl to Dennis, a germophobic man.

Split is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who is known for directing many other classic horror films with a twist such as The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000), and The Visit (2015). The latest film was highly anticipated by many Shyamalan fans.

Sophomore Isabela Creighton said, “I would recommend this film to anyone who likes suspense films because I was scared and shocked the whole time.”

The film includes many twists that just add to the intensity of the film. The film climaxes when “the Beast,” Kevin’s 24th personality, is revealed. The Beast allows Kevin to alter his body and become almost superhuman. “The scariest part for me was when he developed into ‘the Beast’ hence the eating people. The sounds were really gross.” said Creighton.

He has a different way of coping with abuse than most people, “the Beast” has an agenda to kill the girls instead, but before brutally murdering Casey, she shows that she has scars on her stomach and upper body. Upon learning that Casey is not “untouched” like the other girls he has killed, he lets her go.

Sophomore Isabel Iglesias said, “The movie had a great plot, but sensitive topics were brought up frequently which might make some people uncomfortable, especially in the scenes where you find out that Casey has been abused and when she shows that she had cut herself because of it.”

The movie Split received many good reviews. Moviegoers and film critics seem to appreciate Shyamalan’s previous films, along with this one. People who have watched the movie claim for it to have them on the edge of their seat wanting to see more the entire time. Split is the first M. Night Shyamalan film of 2017, many will be anxiously waiting for another one of his movies to top the last.
