Ed Sheeran released his new album, ÷ (Divide), on Mar. 3rd. The album is part of the trilogy “+” and “X”, which came out in 2011 and 2014, respectively. Fans have waited two years for this album release. Sophomore Iyla Madriz said, “I was so excited he finally released new music. It had been such a long time.” Not only were Sheeran’s fans happy, but so were the critics. There are high expectations regarding the album; it is set to earn 2017’s biggest debut for most popular album according to industry forecasters, such as Billboard.

On the sixteen-track project, Sheeran released vastly different songs that showcase his musical ability, from ballads to hip-hop. According to Spotify, the album shattered the record for first-day streams with over 56 million. The record was previously held by The Weeknd with the release of Starboy in November with 29 million streams.

“It was a bit unusual how Sheeran decides to start off his album,” Madriz said. “Even though ‘Eraser’, is a rap song, he manages to pull it off even if it is not his strongest suit and ended up being a nice addition to the album.”

On Jan. 6, “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You” were released as the album’s singles and gave insight into what to expect from Divide. The album, as usually exhibited in Sheeran’s work, is personal to Sheeran’s life experiences.“Supermarket Flowers”, for instance,  documents a vivid description of his grandmother’s  funeral.“Barcelona” and “Bibia Be Ye Ye” add cultural flavor to the album as the tunes reflect Hispanic influences.

“Shape of You” was one of the biggest hits with its upbeat tempos and unique catchy tune. Sheeran makes sure to add his usual slow tempo ballads that he is known for. Overall, Divide shows a new direction in music for Ed Sheeran as he ventures into all genres of music on this album.
